Darting My Path

Many moons ago after going through some crap with life  and not having a clue what I wanted to do, I decided the best way to figure out what to do next was to throw some darts at a map and just move there.

At first I was scared and not sure if  I was just a nutcase, but I went with it anyway. I got a map of the US and threw three darts. The plan was to move to the one that was farthest away.

I ended up moving to Wisconsin and loving it. It was amazing. Best decision of my life.

I discovered myself, discovered food, discovered a man didn’t have to hit me to show he loved me and I discovered freedom.

It’s been an amazing 20 years.

So now I am settled into the good life and enjoying being self-employed. I am a photographer for those who don’t know and as much as I love taking pictures of nature I am going to venture into studio photography. It’s something I have been struggling with for a while now because I wasn’t sure if I would ‘lose myself’ and veer away from what I really love doing.

I think I have finally found a solution to that problem. I am once again seeking help from a map and this time instead of relocating my whole life to somewhere new, I am going to visit somewhere different each weekend. In the process I can learn new things about North Texas because after 3 years, I still don’t care for it much.

Hopefully I can balance both projects and find true happiness here in the greater Dallas area.

:) I hope that you find what you are looking for and that all of the happiness life can possibly offer makes its way to your front door. I’d say you deserve it.

When I look at photographs like this, I do like sitting back and deciding what this picture means to me. However, it’s much more fun (less emotionally taxing? haha) to look at portraiture and what real artists (photographers) can capture in people. I hope that the venture into studio photography is one that you end up enjoying, and that you find something else within you that you love.

Monique we all have to walk a wide path to see where on it we fit. I liked Dallas for a while, but after a while I yearned for the east coast again and moved back. I loved living pretty much everywhere I’ve lived all over the globe. I must admit however that I best love being at home in Florida. it’s just so comfortable all the time weather wise; even during hurricanes; and I know what to expect from people. being a photographer you need to move around and see what’s out there waiting to be discovered through the lens of your heart. Use that spiritual wanderlust to make a path lit with stars and laughter and you’ll never be far from home wherever you are. yes hon, finding a man who treats you like a Woman instead of his enemy is truly the icing on the cake. Good For You Sweets. Keep Doing it YOUR WAY, and You’ll be Fine.

Love this post! Using darts to re-route your life is either very courageous or very crazy, not sure which. Either way though, sounds like it worked out great for you – congrats!
I love the way you’re discovering new places now. So much so, you’ve inspired me to put a little twist of fate into my own life.
My daughter and I wrote down several day trips and artsy activities on scraps of paper and folded them up & tossed them into a jar. Because she does school online, we have a couple “sick days” every semester that we put the computer and books aside and do something else together. Now we get to draw a piece of paper from our “Fun Jar”. Thanks so much for the idea!

Wow, that’s amazing. Great plan if you’re single. Any ideas for someone who needs that dart effect but has a family and wants to/has to stay put? Is there any symbolic dart out there somewhere?

What a great idea to visit new areas each weekend! We did that after we moved across the country and have learned a great deal in the process.

Oh and what is it with people doing normal 78 degree things when it’s over 100 out? I don’t get it either!

Hope that you’re happy in Dallas, and I think that would be a hella cool way to decide where to move. Kind of like “Pin the Tail on the Donkey” only “Pin Our Next House.”

I have done the dartboard thing… but not exactly. I have moved from NJ to NM to London by myself and it has always been terrifying at first, but the right decision in the end. It’s a wonderful way to dig down and find bits of yourself that you didn’t know were there, and allow them to flourish in a new setting.

I have also re-trained and changed directions professionally twice in my adult years, both times for the better. I sense a kindred spirit in you. Best of luck with everything you do.

That was either a very brave or a very desperate thing to do. Either way, it was the best thing to do. Can you even imagine what your life would be like if you hadn’t thrown those darts?

As for your photography. I have been admiring it on FB, and I’m sure you will find new pleasures in anything you decide as subject matter.
