Last weekend I went to one of my all time favorite places called EatZi’s Market and Bakery. I don’t even know where to begin to describe what the place is. It’s like, a restaurant, bakery, deli and more all wrapped in one. You can go in and get fresh baked bread and cakes and cookies, or have a chef made salad or sandwich. They also freshly prepare meals so you can go get everything you need to pretend you cooked a good meal for your dinner party1. It’s really an all-in-one place. Sadly, it’s downtown Dallas which is a bit too far for me and Mr. Glass to make the trip all the time. So, when we go it’s even more like a treat for us.
Things aren’t cheap at Eatzi’s and as much as I want to grab everything I see, I usually only go grab some bread and cookies from the bakery, and an amazingly delicious pastrami sandwich. They prepare it kind of like Subway does where you stand there and point at everything you want on it and they make it fresh for you.2 The list of breads and toppings and meats and cheeses you can get are endless3 but I always go in and get the same thing because it’s like perfection on bread for me.
Anyway, the last time I went to EatZi’s I decided to grab something new from the bakery. I’m addicted to their oatmeal raisin cookies so maybe they’d have something else that I would L-O-V-E.
I ended up grabbing two items. The first was a small, yet very expensive crème brûlée and then I spotted a delicious looking chocolate raspberry cupcake.
Bad bad choices they were.
The crème brûlée tasted like I was having a massive make out session with an orange peel. Not pleasant AT ALL. In fact, I think making out with an orange peel would have indeed been better! Just thinking about it now makes me want to brush my teeth and gargle with some Listerine. Ick nast!
As for the delicious looking chocolate raspberry cupcake, that too was all wrong for my taste palette. I love chocolate, and I really enjoy raspberries but there was something just not right about mixing the two flavors together in a cupcake. In fact, it was so unpleasant, I ended up throwing it away after two bites… and like I said, I ♥ chocolate. Me tossing chocolate out is unheard of.
Needless to say, I won’t be picking up either of those so-called tasty treats ever again. Don’t let this discourage you though…. If there is an EatZi’s near you4, I would suggest you run to it immediately5 and grab something from the hundreds upon hundreds of other delicious choices.

oh man, I hate when I try something NEW and it backfires like that. Sorry you had to throw away chocolate. That MUST have been awful!

lol, it really was. I even thought about eating it anyway because I felt bad about throwing it out, but decided it was better to toss the cupcake than to “toss my cookies” later on.
Good Call!

They did look AMAZING in the store. Sadly, they didn’t taste as good =/
I too live in the Dallas metroplex…thanks for sharing a new restuarant to try out. As if I’ll ever get through all of the restuarants Dallas has to offer…LOL

I feel the same way. The list of restaurants I need to go to is so long, I think I need 2 lifetimes to complete it.
Aww maan, it’s things like these that make us reluctant to step out and try new things, ainnit? Sorry those two items were yucky (LOVE your punny title for this post, btw), and I hope you will try some other things available – now that you know of two you don’t like, you can ask an employee for ideas, maybe?

I am actually going to try an ask for some advice next time. The problem is that the place is usually so busy that finding someone who is free is impossible.
Oh no! I love creme brulee and that’s just so disappointing if it’s not made right!
As for the cupcake, I like chocolate and raspberries together, but not mixed (if that makes sense). Like maybe they should’ve made a chocolate cupcake and then put a couple of fresh raspberries on top of the chocolate frosting, that would be good! Sorry you had to throw the cupcake out.

The place we have near us, local owned is called Dorothy Lane Market.. and it’s just like EatZi – the are most known (all over the place) for their Killer Brownies, which are to die for.
They have a creme brulee just like the one you pictured.. the ones I saw last week were in little crocks – too cute..
The one closest to us is the 2nd they built and it’s nice.. but the newest one sounds so much like Eatzi – restaurant, awesome foods, local grown/produced items, organic, olive bar, sandwiches made to order.. and a chef who will cook whatever meats you bring him right there on the grill.. We tried it once when it was just me and hubby out for an afternoon – but definitely not someplace I’d take the kids for lunch. Sooo much stuff.
Deli and Bakery are incredible. We now have Kroger in the area trying to recreate the whole natural feel (they aren’t doing too bad a job).

Those desserts may not have tasted good, but they sure LOOK good! No Eatzi’s near me, though. Sad, bc I would be interested in checking them out.

awww…our Eatzi’s closed over a year ago. I miss it so… :0(
I agree raspberry and chocolate do not mix well.

I’m not a creme brulee fan, but I’ll be damned if I throw away chocolate!!! lol!
Actually, I am surprised to hear that the choco-raspberry concoction was a flop! I usually enjoy the combo, but I can see how it may be kinda gross if there is too much berry… ::SHRUG::
I hope that you are having a fantastic ICLW!
(And thanks for stopping by my blog – I appreciate it a lot!)

Sounds like an awesome place! I’m sorry the desserts were disappointing…I know chocolate layer cake with raspberry filling is my absolutely favorite. I think I just might have to bake one this weekend.

I love creme brulee but I’ve never had it with another flavour. Sorry they didn’t taste as good as they looked!

I love your footnotes.
But I am weeping huge tears over the chocolate raspberry cupcake. I don’t really care for those two flavors united together as one, however, when a very talented pastry chef takes that on it can be very good.
Now on to your cupcake in particular. Could you at least salvage the frosting? It sucks that it didn’t taste good at all especially since it was probably pricey.
I wonder if you had taken a bite right after you paid for it, if they would have given you something else since you were not satisfied. Probably not, but I still wonder.

Sadly, the frosting was the same way. YUCK. Just an awful mixture of the two.
Having a bad cupcake is one way to ruin my day. But, I live for the things (and cookies, can anything chocolate) so yeah.
