It’s not like me to keep things from my readers. I have always maintained that I have no secrets, my life is what it is, an open book. Granted, there are some things I choose not to discuss because some people just don’t deserve the attention me writing about would give them.1
But see, what I have been keeping hidden isn’t about someone else. It’s about me.
No, it’s not that I am Jane from the previous post.2 It’s that I got a tattoo.
Several fun weeks ago, when S was in town and we were hanging out in that tattoo and piercing parlor, I went ahead and got my very first tattoo. I permanently inked my body, and now you all know even before my mother does… and boy is she going to kill me when she finds out.
I have always wanted something simple and cute on my shoulder. As time passed and I got older3 I decided that I would get a butterfly on my wrist.
I wanted a small butterfly… I had something in mind for when I would one day go and get it done, but since this was a impulse decision, I chose something from one of the 70 books they had in the shop.
I could have sworn this little thing was A LOT SMALLER in the book, but on my wrist it looks huge!
And oh, it hurt like a mother frosting cake kicker. I was told I got it in one of the most sensitive places, and I did notice that the lower he got on my wrist, the more painful it was. It took a lot for me to not head butt him while he was doing it… but common sense kicked in and I knew if I did it, I’d end up with a not-so-cute-tattoo.
About two weeks after getting it and it was healing it, I didn’t like it so much, but now that it is looking pretty decent I’m loving it.
On August 23rd, I am going to get my 2nd tattoo,4 which will be a ladybug5… also on my wrist. Clearly, I learned nothing from the pain I felt before so I need to endure it yet again.

- you know who you are [↩]
- I am going to deny it until someone can prove otherwise [↩]
- and the threats from my mother didn’t scare me as much [↩]
- what they say about it being addicting is very true. i was planning my second one within hours… and i already know what my third one will be - if my mother hasn’t killed me by then [↩]
- it’s super cute, I already have it picked out and everything. its like a heart shaped ladybug [↩]

The butterfly looks great.
So you will have bugs on both wrists or on the same arm?
lol…well, you’re one of the club…a big club. tattoos hurt over bony areas, and the outlines hurt the worst, especially over bony areas.
welcome to the club!

Love the tattoo! I’m sure your mom won’t be too hard on you! It looks great!
I’m about to get one before the summer’s over, but mine might be a little big. I’m planning to get a huge tiger tattoo on my back, and my name in Thai letters on my arm. Hope it doesn’t hurt too bad! xD

Congrats on the cute tattoo! I started getting tattoos on my 50th birthday - I love them! Each one has a special meaning to me. I have four so far - going to get the next one’s in Oct. - these will be tiny and on the inside of the wrist - and yeah that is a painful spot, so I’m going very small.
There is a new blog on Entrecard Women’s Ink - she posts photos of readers’ tattoos. I sent her mine and she posted yesterday (with a link to my blog too). You might want to show of yours too. She has some great photos of truly lovely tattoo art work - it makes me tempted to get some a bit bigger one of these days.
There was a great discussion in the Entrecard forums yesterday too about tattoos (title: I’ll show you mine). A few folks shared photos of their tats too.

Yikes the thought of a tatoo hurt as I was reading this and on top of being afraid of butterflies, I now need a drink. lol.
Hey I love these footnotes, I’ll have to see about adding this plugin to my blog, they are funny!!
that looks cute!! wow, i wish im as brave as you. hehe i dont think ill ever have one for the simple reason that im scared to do it. i know it hurts. my husband had one on his arm. his brother does great tattoos.

My daughter has a number of tattoos and claims they don’t really hurt much. But this is the same twisted individual who pierced her ear in math class with a push pin because she was bored.
I’m fine with those horribly lame temporary tattoos, yes I am. But in addition to hating pain, I’m also terribly fickle. Permanent artwork on my person just isn’t a good idea.
But you’ve got a really nice butterfly!
Nice Tatoo!!

That’s a real nice tattoo. I love butterflies. Are you putting your next tattoo on the same wrist?
I’ve been thinking about getting one on my foot or ankle but I still haven’t made up my mind about what I want.
It’s pretty! I have wanted to get a smal sun and moon with a few stars sprinkled on my wrist for a while, but if it hurst like a mother frosting cake kicker (I am totally stealing that, by the way), I may reconsider.
Learning from your mistakes is over-rated, I think.
So, has your mom killed you yet?
Cool tattoo! And “mother frosting cake kicker” made me laugh.

Nice Tat! Welcome to the club
I had to laugh when I read about your plans for your 2nd one. It’s funny that regardless of the pain, it’s addictive… My first one was on my shoulder blade - full color and 3 hours work - ouch! I’ve had 2 more since then and am planning another one for my son.
Sweet tat! I want to get a tat myself but I don’t do needles well. I figure about the time they find another way to do tats without needles is when I will get one! You are a brave woman!
Ooh. I like that. But seriously, I want proof that it’s real and not airbrushed. Are you willing to submit a notarized statement from the artist who did it? HUH?
(Yeah, yeah. I crack me up too.)
I have a tattoo on my navel. It’s a lollipop with the word “Lickable” going around it. When I was young and had only 1 child, it was teh sexay.
Then I had two kids straight in a row and let’s just say I won’t be posting a pic anytime soon.
I do want to get a design with the initials of my kids, though. TheMan thinks tattoos are stupid, but that’s ok. He married me already. He’ll have to deal.
@ Kevin - I plan to do them all on the same wrist. Eventually making some kind of inked bracelet… if I am still alive.
@ lala - Thank you! And oh did it ever hurt when he went across those bony parts.
@ Thaiger - Oh, if she doesn’t kill me, she will cause me great pain.
@ Lady Rose - I saw yours and loved them.
@ Natural - The footnotes are a lot of fun. Everyone should get them. And while it did hurt - A LOT - the pain was gone within minutes of him being done.
@ jenn - Fear was the reason I was holding out for so long… and well also my mothers wrath… but don’t get it on your wrist or somewhere with a scrawny bone and you should be ok.
@ Kelly - OUCH! Your daughter is um, brave? LOL. Yeah, you don’t want anything permanent that might want to have gone a week later. I still look at mine sometimes and go “whoa”.
@ Gina - Thanks!
@ Jazz - Yup, same wrist, not exactly sure where yet. I figure I will put them all in the same general area so I can cover it when I need to (like at work which is very very anti-tattoo)
@ JD - Your tattoo sounds so cute. As of this moment, my mom is still clueless, so for now, I am safe. Oh yeah, you can steal that… I’ll send you the release form asap. lol
@ Musing - Thank you
@ Dianne - 3 hours!! Ouch! Mine was like 20 minutes and I really getting antsy.
@ Momto4kids - The pain is so hard to explain. See, I hate needles. Getting an IV in me requires a big fight anytime I am at a hospital. But this pain is more… grating? And I promise, once he was above the lower wrist (about half of the tattoo) I felt close to nothing. So get it in a soft and cushiony place.
@ Jinxster - LOL. I’ll get right on getting the proof you require. And omg, the description of your lollipop tat is too funny. I like the sound of getting one with your kids initials.
I love your tatoo so cute! I don’t have any yet, but I plan on getting one soon.

When I got my tattoo I was hanging out with a great guy who agreed to get a tattoo with me. He too got his on his wrist but he got a spider done, and spider has a lot of fine details. We were there for over an hour… getting tiny little needles pricked into his wrist. Silly boy. The sprider looks great to this day though.
The butterfly is adorable!
I don’t think there’s any one image I could put on my body that I wouldn’t grow annoyed with. I’m a clean-slate type of person. Even a few hours with a temporary tattoo will have me bringing out the rubbing alcohol to get it off. That said, I do appreciate ink on other people, and that butterfly is really cute. I can’t wait to see the design for the lady bug.

Oh, you are braver than I. It is a cute butterfly though. I’ve never even had my ears pierced. Any pain is too much for me ;O)

Mine is on my foot, another painful area.. Congrats on the pretty butterfly!
Cute and very tasteful, Monique. Make sure you don’t wait too long and conveniently forget to tell your mom about it. I’ve had a couple for a few years now. My first one was an angel on my back. Well, I totally forgot to tell my dad. When I lived at home, I left the bathroom with a towel around me and all I heard was “Umph, what’s that on your back?! Messing up your body!” Whew, it’s funny now but it wasn’t so hilarious then. Warning – they can be addictive :).
Luv the tattoo. I have two myself and am thinking about getting another one but haven’t decided for sure yet.
Have always flirted with the idea of a tattoo. My son apparently has inherited the thought LOL. Love the butterfly!

Also, your Entrecard is not showing up for me.

I got a tattoo as my 40th birthday present to myself. I took a long time thinking about it. Mainly because I had to decide where to put it. I wanted to see it, so it did end up on my wrist. But seriously, it’s a major consideration as a woman where to put that tatt. Your boob? That lovely dolphin could end up looking like some elongated sea creature when gravity takes hold. Your butt cheek? That butterfly could become some weird engorged moth when expansion sets in. Oh ya, really careful consideration!
