Does This Mean I Have A Life?

by Monique on July 12, 2008

I am a big TV watcher. In fact, I think I watch way too much TV… or at least I think I do. But just the other day as I was preparing to record something on my DVR, I noticed I was down to 6% space. I quickly began scrolling through the programs on the DVR and realized I had full seasons of shows that I loved, and had yet to see. There was stuff on it from October of 2007, including the complete season of Lost, Brothers & Sisters, Grey’s Anatomy, and so much more. So much of it is ABC programming… I wonder if I secretly dislike watching their network live.

I have been spending my days off watching these shows, which in the beginning was not a bad thing. There is something refreshing about watching a one hour show in less than 40 minutes. No commercials makes life so much easier. However, 12 back to back episodes with Izzy Stevens is a lot more than I care to ever again tolerate. Or maybe that’s just because I have a great dislike for Katherine Heigl.

All of this really got me to thinking, does the fact that I don’t have time to watch all this stuff when it comes on mean I actually have a life? Or does it mean I am watching way too much TV as is, and cramming even more of it onto my poor DVR?

Oh well, regardless of what the truth may be, I do know that I still have far too many episodes of Wife Swap to watch. I guess those will have to wait until next weekend.

Uh, yeah you’re watching too much tv! I record shit because more than one thing that I like comes on at a time. And some days everything sucks so I want to have something in reserve!

But…I don’t have a job. Or a life. I KNOW I watch too much TV, LOL.

You can never have enough Wife Swap in my book! That show was made to freak out my children! Matter of fact every time they get done watching that show I say I am calling! Suddenly picking up is no problem! I am a TV addict, I don’t think ABC has an online watching site. I do watch my missed shows of NBC and FOX at hulu.com. We have yet to get a DVR, I keep telling myself if we had one my excuses would be out the window! I would then have to do the things I put off to watch TV. I have no advise only it ought to be a great weekend!

4 Petula 07.12.08 at 1:37 pm

LOL… Yes, maybe that’s what it means. My DVR is quite full too. I watched some of the shows yesterday and realized I hadn’t watched tv in more than a week. Too busy. I don’t necessarily think I have a life… I think I need to get a life outside of my kids! ;-)

Aren’t DVRs great?!

@ Angelika - oh sure burst my bubble.. I was hoping it meant I was in great demand and far too busy to watch tv!

@ Brittany - I know!! Just thinking about not having one makes me tear up.

@ Kathy - I love the show, but I have so many episodes. After a while all the families seem the same. The weekly break in between episodes is greatly needed. How can you live without a DVR??? Once you have one, life is never the same. lol

6 Relax Max 07.12.08 at 5:23 pm

Ummmm….yes. Too much TV. You know the names of far too many (ABC!) programs. Worse, you know too many names of actors in them. What could be worse. Holy cow! - you OWN the shows, Monique!

Yes, you have a life. Wait - a WHOLE season of “Lost”???? :) :)

Thank you for your comments on my blogs. I think you are just great.

Yo! Monique! You TOTALLY have a life, because its all the people who sit and watch the commercials who have no life and nothing better to do with their time than watch commercials right?

Lately, I’ve felt like I don’t have a life because I’m addicted to Hulu! It’s always sunny in philladelphia, the office, so many good shows to watch! And even with those I hate those 10 second commercials they stick in there!

No one ever says, “I wanna watch TV when I grow up…”

Hmmnn, I don’t really care much about TV, except when Baywatch was still on. I remember during the first season of Lost, it looked different from other shows initially and I thought I got hooked. But half-way through that season, I got lost. :D

To answer the question, it depend on what life means to us. We really have different views on it so there are no definite answers. :)

Anybody recorded the Baywatch seasons? :D

14 Ohio Real Estate 07.13.08 at 11:53 am

I do Internet and TV… Usually at the same time… I hate when the screen says, “You can only record three programs at once, choose one to cancel.” I’ll usually sit there staring with a twinge of anger and think… think… then sigh as I hit the cancel button a little too hard aiming at the TV… I’m a reality show nut and HGTV/Food Network… I used to do ER but since then, I’m not much on the one hour dramas… You have a life… hence the fact you’re not sitting in front of the box for every single episode as soon as it comes on…

This posts reminds me of my recorded shows I need to watch tonight… Thanks…

Hi, I think maybe you are watching too much tv. Anymore with the selection of 100s of channels with showtimes with conflicting times, it is hard to watch everything you like DVR or not. I am more of CBS gal and I typically watch all the programming at night such as CSI and Shark and Criminal Minds.

It does sound like too much TV. I very rarely pay attention to TV any more. I watch some movie channels, The News Channels, and I will fall asleep to the the Discovery, Science, or History channel. But even when I watch TV, I’m not really watching, the TV is on, but I’m normally on my laptop working on my blog or doing something else on the computer at the same time.

I’m not sure exactly how to do this as I have not done it, but you can get some devices and record from your DVR onto a computer. I think the device you need is called a Dazzle and once you have it connected you can just run those shows onto the hard drive of the machine.

There are also some cards and drivers that you can use to create your own DVR on Linux. This makes a lot of sense really as you can put together a cheap computer with 3-4 500 gig sata drives and record everything you would ever want to record.

Eh, “too much” is a relative term anyway! Enjoy your tv. I don’t have a DVR, but I neeeeed one. I think I listen to more tv than I actually watch. I like to have it on while I’m beading. (Except for Hell’s Kitchen - that got my full attention!)

And I’ve never heard of hulu.com - have to check that out right now!

31 Wendy 07.13.08 at 1:47 pm

I pay a fortune for a billion channels of satellite TV, and I don’t have a clue when any of the shows I actually like are on. It doesn’t matter, since I get distracted far too easily, and even when I plan to watch something, I tend to not remember to turn on the TV until after it’s over.

That’s why I love Miro. I don’t have to remember when something’s on. When a new episode appears, the next day its downloaded and ready for me to watch. If its just a re-run, I don’t have to waste time watching or waiting for it. It simply isn’t there. :D

Yea, you have a life — it’s the one you’re living and it seems to fit you just fine. I don’t personally watch that much t.v. and like to blame it on my hubby controlling the remote, but if I’m honest, it’s because I put a higher priority on reading and doing stuff online.

hehe. I’m not a big TV watcher, so I’m not really sure how to answer the question. Though I do own all 9 seasons of the X-Files on DVD (the only show I watched religiously), and I do admit that I enjoy seeing an hour long show in 40-minutes time. My husband, on the other hand, was very dependent on watching the shows as they aired weekly. It was the only way he could keep track of what day or what time it was.

I love being able to watch a series, well in a series. I will often rent the DVD’s to do just that. I, too, don’t have as much TV time anymore. The blog takes more of it and TV that is too interesting distracts me so I leave “reality” TV on in the background. It is too bad you can’t save more shows on DVR for those rainy weekends, but then they wouldn’t sell or rent so many DVD’s.

Hi Monique!

Of course you do have a life! Watching someone else’s mindless chatter could be considered better than engaging in your own mindless chatter ;-) (I’m being deliberately sarky here).

It’s your life - do with it what you will.

There is one soap that I watch if I happen to be home and am not doing anything else. I am too embarrased to mention it by name here. But just to throw a bit of fun into the ring, if anyone guesses it (assuming anyone even cares!), I’ll own up!

Since I travel so much for work, I end up in the same boat as far as my Tivo is concerned. I buy the seasons and go through them in only a few sitting (or one if I have a 13+ hour flight).

I also have a DVR and record quite a few series that my wife and I like to watch. However, for quite a few of the series that are not “stories,” we set them to hold only 5 episodes at a time. For example, I don’t know why, but we like Clean House. So we only keep 5 episodes and watch them when nothing else is on that we really wanted to watch. Sure, we may miss episodes, but those shows are the kind that don’t need to be watched in order.

In the past few years I have reduced my TV viewing substantially to the point where I only really watch one show a week (not counting sports).

I have kids so my life is busy enough. You just need to think about what you have been doing lately (besides watching 12 episodes of Izzy Stevens) to determine if you have been too busy with life.

69 TheSnackHound 07.13.08 at 10:09 pm

Well, they say there is such thing as “appointment viewing” like they did in the days before VCRs and so many reruns. An appointment is a sign of having a life, so if you are watching at specific times on your days off, I would say you have a life.

But I always wondered…if one is watching shows about people that don’t have lives, does that make one lifeless by association?

70 Jennyjinx 07.13.08 at 10:15 pm

I’ve taken to watching tv online. No lie. I let the fam have the televisions and I’ll listen/watch while I’m doing other stuff. I do Hulu.com, CBS.com (I’m a secret soap watcher, don’t tell) and YouTube. Usually when I’m tweeting I’m working while watching/listening to a video of some sort.

I, however, have no real life and must live vicariously through everyone else online. I get the best of both worlds!! Woot! Does that mean something bad? :)

BTW, congrats on getting picked for the comment rush (I voted for Operation Chaotic Comments, you know- I also suggested it).

Well, it means you are busy and that is both a good and bad thing!

If it’s any consolation, I have whole seasons of Rescue Me, House, 24, Nip/Tuck, The Shield, The Closer, and a few other series stockpiled. I just can’t find time to watch them, but I don’t know if that means I have a real life or not!! It just means I am constantly on the run!

You do have a life! I do exactly the same thing you do, record everything and watch it later. Sure, it takes up alot of time but! Things flow so much better when you watch whole seasons at one go.
It’s fun! Don’t stop :)

Since we got our DVR, we actually watch more TV — but at least it is better TV. LOL

Just keep recording your shows if it makes you happy. I used to do that until I finally realized, yes, I have a life, and no time for TV. Besides you need that TV time to blog (and drop on Entrecard sites)!

77 dannyd 07.13.08 at 11:19 pm

I do agree life needs a balance approach. You know the saying, too much of one thing is bad. Tv like alot of things you have to use in moderation.

I do agree with too much commercials that run forever….a lot of time is wasted. That is why I watch everything online…commercial free.

Have a great day!

Hey Monique!
I thought you would like to know that the new season of ANTM is being worked on!

Now back on topic lol. I am a huge TV buff too, I mean I have a blog and a forum dedicated to that show lol. If there were no commercials I would be in Heaven

79 Cromely 07.13.08 at 11:29 pm

I was secretly greatful for the writers strike earlier this year. It gave me a chance to get caught up on my Tivo. I’ve come close to running out of space a couple times, but I moved some of the stuff on to a notebook to make more room.

The best thing about Tivo is that there is now never anything bad on TV.

Good luck on clearing your Tivo. Getting down to one screen is a big accomplishment, but you can really feel like you’ve done something when all that’s left is suggestions.

I don’t watch television at all. I used to, but there just isn’t anything on anymore, so we had it unhooked. If you enjoy it then do it. Just that simple. Have a great day. :)

Well, you have time to write this blog, so you must have time to do other things besides watch tv. As long as you have a balance in life, you should be ok:)

LOL!!! Just the other day I realized my DVR was empty and I hadn’t recorded anything in almost a month. I tried to figure out if TV sucks or I had too much time on my hands :)

89 Greg 07.14.08 at 12:27 am

If only I had DVR ( or TiVo or whatever), I’d probably spend ALL day watching tv. But unfortunately I don’t, so I end up missing all of my favorite shows. I need to get one quick.

I Watch hell lot of television - My Fav are Reality TV shows - I learned lot of things by doing so. I don’t feel there is any harm watching and being addited to television. Sometime even i write my posts while watching TV shows. ( is that the reason my posts have lots of gramatical errors :-) ) donno.

I have a stack of DVDs I have not got around to watching yet. You may not have a life, but at least you have a distraction.

I think you do have a life, and it’s probably thanks to DVR! :P
I don’t have DVR, but I usually tape shows and movies I want to watch on tapes - and then never get around to watching them, and then have to tape over them when the next show comes on!

So I think taping shows is good for us, because we end up watching less TV :P

I think most folks watch “too much” tv - myself included. I have a few shows I just have to watch but using the dvr helps fit them into life inbetween other stuff, plus our tv time is also family time, we have shows we enjoy together - so we laugh, spend time together at same time. I also do other stuff while watching tv - exercise bike, crocheting, sort mail, etc.

99 Dark Angel 07.14.08 at 2:39 am

You can never watch tom much TV. Not when there is Dr. McDreamy, Greg House, Lincoln Burrows…

100 valmg 07.14.08 at 3:32 am

It might not mean you watch too much but rather you save too much. I love my Tivo but after I watch it I delete it. I don’t keep anything there permanently.

I was like this before, I always wanted my favorite TV show to be recorded in our DVD recorder due to time conflict in my work I cannot watch it live, but those recorded shows remains as is and never been watch. Lately I prefer browsing internet rather than watching TV.

102 Teasas Tips 07.14.08 at 4:35 am

I agree with Stan…Tivo makes me watch more TV than I did b4. I don’t think it means you have no life, maybe you have too much life that prevents you from catching up with all your recorded shows. LOL.
