For those who don’t know, I speak Spanish. I am a Latina. Not all of us look like Penelope Cruz or Jennifer Lopez. There is a whole bunch of us who are dark, and just as attractive you idiot assholes. So when you think you are clever and decide you want to talk about me to my brown face in a language you are hoping I don’t understand, you will get busted.
Now if only I could learn Korean so I can bust the rude bitches who do my nails.

Monique, you are awesome. Every time I come here I feel like I learn a little more about you. But then I guess that’s the point right?
I need to learn Korean, too. Whenever I go get my nails and feet done they start pointing and talking all animated. But if I….uh…didn’t wait so long to go, I probably wouldn’t get talked about as bad!

This happened to me before. I am haitian-american. For whatever reason, whenever I was visiting home (Brooklyn) often times I’d bump into other haitians. Usually young people. Guys especially talk to each other so loudly on the train discussing every other female, including me, in Creole. Sometimes they get fresh. Other times I jsut know they’d be ashamed to know I can speak creole. When I’d feel catty, I’d say some clever remark in creole and sashay off the subway.
I just make sure I never trip.
That.. that wouldn’t be good.
anyway whoever it is who inspired this post, I flip the bird to ‘em for you girl
De nada
(oooh snap JEMi!)
btw I love learning more about you on your super awesome blog

You should bring in a mini tape recorder when you get your nails done and tape the entire thing then find someone who can translate for you or better yet bring them in with you.
lol…well i need to learn spanish for the dominican woman that does my hair. i just know they are talking about my nappy head.
who’s bothering you.

Argh! That’s one of my pet peeves when people talk in their own language around other people. I don’t mind it so much when I’m serving them because I hardly think they should change their comfort level just so I can tell if they’re talking about me or not. But when there’s a group of people all hanging together, and two or three people start talking in a different language - SMACK! lol
I’d love to learn Spanish.. but unfortunately I can only speak Tagalog. But it’s ok, I don’t have a filipino accent so people usually can’t tell that I understand Tagalog - so I’ve busted a few people when they’re talking about me. hehe
I’m mad at myself for not taking my Spanish classes serious when I took them in high school. I wish I could have learned something. The only thing I know how to do is count to 100, say the days of the weeks, and the Months:(
I think it’s kind of rude to not speak English if you are running a business, especially when your cusotmers are in front of you. It makes it seem like you have something to hide.

I HATE that. I’m Portuguese, which gives me a bit more understanding of the Spanish language because they’re really close (along with three years of Spanish in high school)…we have a medical school up here, and a lot of Hispanic people come here from the inner city to go to this school. The school is part of the parking garage we use, and the students will congregate in packs outside and make fun of us in Spanish as we walk up the hill.
Needless to say, they were very VERY shocked when I stopped one day and gave them a what-for in their own language! They were very respectful after that, as I told them that they never knew who actually understood what they were saying…
I took French in high school and college. The only time I get to use it is with our French Canadian friends. They get to giggle a lot. It is very rude to assume someone does not understand another language and to talk about them. I take my IPod when I get my nails done.

lol. Owned. I tried to learn spanish, quite a few times, and had learned a little, but when I moved I lost pretty much all of it because no one up here speaks it! Except, “hola” which gets thrown around to make people feel cool. Me included.
haha.
I love Korean, that’s the first international language I want to learn so that I can understand the dialogue of my favorite Korean drama, instead of reading the subtitle lol!
Don’t get pissed with people who don’t appreciate beauty and talent Monique, you are far more better than them…you are wonderful, I know that by just reading your posts
Cheer up girl!
D’OH!!!!
this cracked me up to no end… I had a roommate who would run into the same thing. She was half Irish, half Puerto Rican, and looked Irish. Many people ended up sticking their feet in their mouths around her.

I thought it would be fun being a white girl who spoke Spanish…but mostly it is boring as I only ever hear typical everyday conversations. But once it was heartbreaking when I was pregnant with my second child and my husband and I were at a party and someone remarked (in Spanish) that my son looked just like his daddy and someone else, who thought I didn’t speak Spanish, said “thank God.” I felt pretty bad then!
rachel b.’s last blog post..it turns out that this isn’t fun
Sorry for taking so long to reply. I went to a casino last night up in Oklahoma. Needless to say, oklahoma + casino + friday night = bad time. LOL.
@ Jillian - Thank you!
@ JEMi - Gracias mija!
@ blueyes - I wish. Sadly I don’t know anyone who speaks Korean.
@ fragile heart - I am usually pretty good about not speaking Spanish right in front of someone unless I am purposely being an ass or I just forget that not everyone understands me when I do it.
@ Mimi - LOL. Well, at least you can count. That’s a start, no?
@ Lisa - I bet. It’s amazing how people just assume who may and may not understand them. I always assume everyone knows what I am saying, so I need to be careful about what I say.
@ beeker - I took French also! My teacher made me hate it with such a passion.
@ Kevin - LOL.
@ manilenya - Awwww, thank you so much
@ Karla - It is fun to leave people speechless.
@ rachel b - OMG! What a rude person!
Thats so true, I have my nail done by orientals and they always speak their language where I can’t even understand them…but I act as if I do…lol
